On Saturday 11th July the club travelled to Warwick for the PAGB National image championships. A total of 33 clubs were lined up to compete in this premier annual competition. Carluke had qualified by being placed 2nd in last year’s event. They were joined by other Scottish clubs, Dumfries and Dundee, who had qualified through the Scottish championships. Carluke and Dumfries both made it into the afternoon final of nine clubs and Carluke ended up in 5th place, with Dumfries 7th. Winners once again were the Wigan 10 club, a truly professional outfit, and worthy winners. The committee would like to congratulate all the members who contributed to the panel of images used in the competition. Without their efforts and talent the club would not have achieved the high standing that it holds nationally.
The Edinburgh International exhibition of photography was judged last month and two Carluke members had works accepted. They were Libby Smith and Hunter Kennedy. Furthermore both were given awards. Libby had a FIAP ribbon and an honourable mention, Hunter an honourable mention, for some of their prints. Edinburgh is the oldest and by far the most difficult Salon worldwide in which to gain an acceptance, so well done to both of them.
The club have been given permission to hold a small exhibition of prints in the library in August. Details will be published soon.

On Friday 17th the club held its first Audio Visual competition. There was a great response from the members with a total of 11 sequences entered. The judge for the evening was Janet Russell from the Hamilton Camera club. The variety of material entered was very wide and ranged from holidays in the Emirates, Scottish scenes, the river festival, the union canal, and studio portraiture, to the Queen's visit to Glasgow in 1978 (30 years in the making obviously). Several of the shows were of top quality and the judge gave first place to Jim Miller's ‘Natures Beauty’. This sequence was of garden scenes around loch fine and Crarae in particular. Jim’s ‘water colour’ treatment of the images and tasteful music went down well with the judge and the audience. Second place went to Bill Barr with ‘The missing link’. Here Bill traced the history of the union canal and the locks near Falkirk which joined the East and west sections. Those locks dismantled in the 1960’s have been replaced with the now famous Falkirk Wheel. Bill had accompanying commentary and music giving his show the feel of a real documentary. Third spot went to Dougie Lockhart with The Queen’s Visit. Here again the style was documentary, only this time with tongue firmly in cheek and a Fyffe Robertson voice impression. The competition proved to be a real success and Hunter Kennedy proposed a vote of thanks to Janet and all the members who had entered.
Will members note that names are now being taken for the annual dinner and presentation. The cost is £15 which includes wine with the meal. The venue is the golf club on Friday 15th May.

Since joining the club 12 years ago David has become the recognised club expert on the subject and has developed his skills to take in the modern trait of a more contemporary style. During the first half, using his young Carluke model ‘Sam’, he was able to demonstrate the various lighting techniques required. In the second half he showed and talked about the images he had taken and how he finished them in Photoshop. David had put in a tremendous amount of work to assemble the whole show. Libby Smith proposed the vote of thanks for a job well done and for sharing his approach to ‘Portraiture’. The members were only too happy to show their appreciation for his efforts and went home with new ideas to improve their own images.

The competition this season has been well supported with large entries in most sections. A pleasing aspect is the effort put in and results gained by relative newcomers to the club and serious photography. Lady members have, as seen above, as usual punched above their weight. This should act as a spur to any would be lady photographers, or male for that matter, out there who would like to learn more about the art. Please feel free to come along any Friday night at the old St Athenasius School behind the new building being erected. It is accessed from Glenafeoch Rd just below the library. There is no annual fee charged for the remainder of the season. Think about it, the holiday season will start soon and this is when you will wish you knew more about your camera and taking photos.
The main event of the evening appropriately featured the newly crowned club champion Libby Smith. Libby’s talk for the evening was entitled ‘Before and After Part Two’. Here Libby was able to show how she starts with a basic image, sometimes taken in poor conditions. She then, with the use of various techniques in photoshop and other computer software, turns that basic image into what can only be described as a work of art. Libby has for the past few years been described as the best printer in Scotland. Anyone who attended last Fridays meeting will agree whole heartedly with that sentiment. As well as the on screen presentation Libby had on display a selection of prints with various paper samples from ‘Permajet’ papers for which she is an official ambassador. This was one of the real ‘plus’ nights at the club when everyone went home not only having been entertained but also having learned a few more tricks of the trade. Hunter Kennedy proposed a well deserved vote of thanks.

Representatives of the club travelled to Warwick University last weekend to take part in the Annual Photographic Alliance of Great Britain Slide Championships. Carluke had qualified for the event along with Dumfries CC through the Scottish championships in the spring.
A total of 31 clubs were competing from the 16 national federations. Each club had pre entered eight slides for the first round, after which Carluke were lying in a lowly 18th place. The second round of eight slides scored much better and Carluke managed to qualify for the nine-club final. The remaining clubs contested the plate competition in the early afternoon with Smethwick PS coming out on top.
The final was contested over 20 slides and to make it more exciting there was a break after the first 10. When the half way results were read out Carluke were lying 2nd equal with Wrekin Arts PC. The scoring of the last 10 slides from each club was a nail biting experience with each of the nine clubs having some good scores and some disappointing ones. The final results announced at 4pm were in first place reigning World club Champions Wigan 10 Fotoclub, second Carluke Camera club, third Wrekin Arts PS, forth Amesham PS. Fellow Scots and archrivals Dumfries CC finished in sixth place.
This was an outstanding result for the club who are predominately known as a print club. To do so well in a national slide competition speaks volumes for the hard work and talent exhibited by the individual photographers and the selection committee where Libby Smith played a prominent part in preparing the slides for the competition. The club photographers whose slides contributed to the success were Bob Avery, Billy Farrell, Hunter Kennedy, Jim Miller, Jim Pollock, Tom Robley, Libby Smith, Neil Smith, and Ed Willis.
The club can now look forward to the new season, which starts with an introduction and enrolment night on the 29th August. Beginners and experience snappers will be made most welcome. As with last season a programme of teaching classes will be held to accompany the normal club activity.

The techniques on show were stunning and left the audience with a mixture of inspiration and awe. Libby is now widely recognised as the best printer in Scotland. This represented the top 50 prints from the entry, judged earlier in 2007 by Rikki O’Neil from Dundee. Libby Smith took the helm and invited criticism from the members on each of the prints. It was interesting to see how their comments compared to those of the judge, which accompanied the prints. Carluke had faired very well in the portfolio, with their four entries scoring, two 17’s for Billy Farrell and Hunter Kennedy a 19 for Libby Smith and the top print on 20 for Jim Pollock. After the break, the set-up was changed and Bill Barr presented a selection of Digital Audio Visual sequences. Just as he was about to start, an image of Bill aged around ten came up on the screen as the audience burst into a chorus of Happy Birthday, and a cake was produced to celebrate an astonished Bill’s 70th birthday. The sequences went down well with the cake, the subjects ranging from, the life of LS Lowry, to scenes from the West Highlands of Scotland. All were produced with Bill’s own commentary, sense of humour, and a deft professional touch.
